Do you have an avid photographer in your life?  If you do this article highlights some great and inexpensive gift ideas for photography lovers.  There are literally hundreds of different things you could get an avid photographer depending on their level of experience and involvement in the craft.  The following however are a handful of good overall ideas that any hobbyist involved in taking photos would love.

Digital Camera Binoculars

If the person you are buying for loves to take pictures of nature or is an animal photographer, why not get them picture taking binoculars.  Yes, technology has advanced to the point where this is possible.  Photography binoculars come in a variety of styles and colors and range in price from 50 to a few hundred dollars.  Depending on the gift getter’s level of involvement in nature photography there should be a model that is right for them.  This can be a more economical alternative to high powered lenses that can sometimes cost thousands of dollars.  The binoculars are compact and easy to carry and they make a unique gift that the person will always remember.

Tripod

Maybe the picture taker you know likes to do self portraits, why not get them a tri-pod if they don’t already have one.  Tri-pods come in all shapes and sizes for different purposes.  A basic one that would be good for taking portraits of families with the photographer in them or self portraits retails for under 50 dollars.  Most models of tri-pods and cameras have universal ports in order to attach a camera to the tri-pod so you won’t have to worry if you are getting the right one.  This is an essential tool for any photographer and can also be used with other equipment such as video cameras.

Memory Card packs

One thing that is common about professional or casual photographers is that they take a lot of pictures.  If they are using a digital medium such as a memory card, get them more memory!  Avid picture takers rarely like deleting their work and having extra space when they need it is always a plus.  Depending on how many pictures the person takes, you can purchase a 2 gigabyte memory card, which will hold about 400 pictures all the way up to a 16 gigabyte card that can hold more than 3000.  Now that’s memory!  The rule of thumb is usually the greater the storage capacity, the more the price.  A 4 gigabyte model will retail around 20 to 30 dollars depending on the manufacturer.  They go up from there to around 100 for a 16 gigabyte model.

Camera Gifts

Of course, the best and most obvious gift to a photographer is a new camera.  One should exercise caution with this gift as choosing a camera for someone can be like picking out clothes for them.  You may think you know what they like and it could blow up in your face.  If you are confident enough however there are a variety of inexpensive and easy to use cameras.  This may be a better idea for a blossoming or young photographer because more experienced people may already have a very good camera.  A decent digital camera retails for around 100 dollars though some models are less expensive.  The less expensive they are usually means the fewer features however, technology has improved to the point where 70 to 80 dollar cameras have a lot of neat features for a clever and creative picture taker.

Some basic things to keep in mind when purchasing photography accessories or cameras for the photographer in your life are to know what they already have, know how involved they are with photography, and always trust your instinct.  Just like giving any other gift to anyone else, if you think for any reason they may not like it or use it, they probably won’t.  Ask friends and family if you are unsure of their interests or what items they might already have.  Shop around and use the internet as a resource for learning a little more about what a photographer would like.
