Dogs – basset hound, Dalmatian, spaniels – for true dog lovers it often does not matter what type of dog it is, a dog is a dog and as such a wonderful  best friend. The great things about dog lovers are that when the festive season or birthdays come around then it is easy to know what to buy and with a huge range of gifts for dog lovers in the market it seems an easy thing to buy a suitable gift.

However, once you start looking at the multitude of items out there in the market, you will quickly find out that the range is overwhelming. This article aims to briefly outline some great gift ideas for dog lovers enabling you to choose a perfect gift for all those animal lovers out there.

When choosing dog lovers gift ideas, the simplest method is to decide which of the main categories interests you most. The three main categories are:

1) Items for the dog – there are a large range of items for the dog itself, although buying dog food treats needs to be reserved for those who know the dog well. Otherwise, you may end up buying treats that owner may not be keen on giving them (a bit like buying sweets for children when you do not really know whether they are allowed them or not). Good alternatives are dog collars or leads, baskets or toys.

2) Dog ornaments. These can be split into two – those about dogs in general and those relating specifically to the actual dog. If thinking about dogs in general, then cups depicting dogs is a popular choice (try to match the breed of dog) as well as items such as key rings, t- shirts and hats. If you know the person and the dog well, then you may want to consider having something specific made using the dog’s portrait. In addition to having the dog professionally photographed (a voucher can be given if you are unable to take the dog along yourself), if you are able to get a simple snapshots of the dog then this image can be put on a series of items. The most popular choices include the image on cushions and t- shirts to cups and plates (for both the dog and the owner) Of course, if you are unable to get the photograph yourself, then vouchers are always available so that the owners can submit the photograph themselves.

3) Dog Calendars – this is an excellent way for dog lovers to have a year long present. On a basic level, you can choose a calendar, which depicts one specific breed of dog, although there is the option of having a custom made calendar of images of the owners own dog.

Overall, when looking for gift ideas for dog lovers it is essential to take your time to find out as much as you can (in a subtle way) about the dog and what makes that specific dog so much more than simply an animal but instead their own special friend.
